Paul is a simple handyman looking for work. He thinks it should be easy to get a job. But it’s not. This is The Wasteland. The Wasteland sucks.

Introducing himself as a handyman is the biggest mistake he’s ever made. Why? Because someone’s on a murdering rampage. Everyone calls this infamous killer “The Handyman.”

A woman saves his life and gives him a job. She might be crazy. She has connections to the chocolate factory in town. Don’t ask what’s in the chocolate.

Paul has two options: convince everyone he’s not The Handyman, or hang by a noose. It could be worse.

Welcome to The Wasteland

The world was once a comfortable place, with people enjoying the abundance of future tech and fusion energy, but when a second star suddenly appeared in the sky, everything fell apart. The future quickly turned into the past. Society collapsed as the climate shriveled all life, and people lost their ability to maintain and create the technology that helped hold everything together. Populations dwindled, and the world became unrecognizable.

Towns and cities now have hundreds of people, when once they had thousands, maybe even millions. Shacks populate the land, older buildings are crumbling, and the people struggle to maintain their sad place in the world. Those who stay in one place often find themselves stricken with boredom and/or insanity. The Wasteland leaves little room for normal people. In fact, crazy is the new normal.

Weird light storms streak the cloudless sky, like lightning without clouds. Rumors of night-demons go from town to town. And The Handyman, a force of nature, the destroyer of hopes and dreams, is responsible for the destruction of entire towns, the killing of hundreds or thousands of people. Can you blame the people who are still alive for being crazy?

I hand drew over 50 pictures for this book. Are they simple? Sure. But they’re full of character. Besides, when was the last time you read a book with that many pictures of any type (graphic novels don’t count)!?

I drew them on plain 8×11 printer paper with a ballpoint pen, then scanned them using my printer. From there, I used Affinity Photo to darken them and clean them up so they looked nice. You can see some of the full scans here [WARNING: SPOILERS]. You’ll notice that some images were drawn in pieces and assembled digitally. I put even more work into Vol. 2’s pictures, cleaning them up to make them look spiffy.

This book even features a few good images, drawn by an acquaintance of mine who’s an architect, Michael Fuller. I really appreciated his contributions, too.

It was my goal, whether you experience the story through audiobook or through ebook/paperback, that you’d get a full experience. It’s meant to be fun. So don’t take it too seriously. Of course, it’s a dark comedy, and more serious stuff happens too, but I thought the pictures were best served with a dose of humor.
